Another five years for Fred Gibbons.

Northern College has appointed Gibbons for a third term as President and CEO, a five-year term that will kick in on July 1st.

Gibbons has been President since taking over for the now-retired Michael Hill back in 2009—first on an interim basis and then dropping the tag following a nationwide search by the college.

Gibbons has been with the college for nearly 25 years, starting in 1992 as a developer of curriculum and a teacher.

“Gibbons has carried out the roles of Registrar and Director of Student Services, Executive Director College Development and Registrar, Principal of the Haileybury School of Mines, as well as Executive Regional Director,” it states in a release.

The release adds Gibbons has done a lot since becoming President.

“Gibbons has been instrumental in positioning Northern as a college of choice for students, industry and community partners. He spearheaded various initiatives to improve and expand campus facilities and has forged partnerships that have moved the college forward while benefiting communities within the College’s catchment area.”

Chair of the Northern College Board of Governors George Kemp says he’s pleased Gibbons has accepted the offer of a contract renewal.

“Going forward, colleges will be facing sustainability challenges precipitated by declining demographics and other fiscal pressures, especially northern and rural colleges,” he adds, “We know that Fred will provide Northern College with the leadership to meet those challenges.”

“I am very honoured and privileged to receive the continuing support of our Board of Governors”, Gibbons states.

“I am equally privileged to work with an exceptionally talented group of staff at each of our four campuses, who on a daily basis, work to assist our students and our communities to achieve success.”
