TAOC POSTER 2015-page-001

Drum circles, dancing, great food are only a few of the events happening Sunday at National Aboriginal Day.

Organizing committee member, Feather Maracle Luke says this is the perfect time to learn about a culture in your own backyard.

“5 a.m. is our sunrise ceremony and between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. we’ll be setting up our tee pees in the Hollinger Park and everyone is welcome.  We have a guest speakers through the day along with stories and teachings. We’ll be having a BBQ as well along with artists booths and information booths.  The focus this year is on traditional teachings and story telling.”

She says although it is a day to spread and teach the first nation culture, you won’t hear too much on Residential Schools.

“I can’t speak for everyone at the event but this is a day of celebration, not a day to bring up a bad time in our history.  But this a great opportunity to ask questions and find about our culture ans we’re happy to share the information to anyone asking aboriginal or not.”
