The long-standing question of ‘will he or won’t be’ should be answered “very soon.”

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has been long rumoured to be a candidate to replace Tom Mulcair as leader of the New Democratic Party.

According to the Elections Canada website, Angus registered as a candidate this past Monday.

However, Angus says it’s merely all part of the “official step of moving forward” for anyone interested in the role.

“When I officially announce (my candidacy) is when I officially announce,” he said, “But I certainly have to follow all the paperwork if I’m interested in pursuing and looking at the option.”

Angus was in Kirkland Lake to discuss issues with locals, an “excellent turnout” from his perspective.

Friday morning, Angus was en route to Toronto to talk to people on what he’s heard and learned.  It is rumoured an event in the GTA this weekend will serve as a launching pad for the bid.

He reiterated that he wasn’t making any decisions without the backing of the people in his own riding.

He added at the end of a phone call with our news room, “You’ll be calling me soon, don’t you worry.”

Thus far, only New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian has announced a leadership bid.

A new leader will be named by the end of October.
