Moosonee has been selected as one of nine locations for new Ontario Provincial Police detachments.

This is part of Phase Two of the OPP’s Modernization initiative. The detachment will be located at 16 Butcher Road.

In a release, the province says these new locations will “enhance community safety and create new local jobs.”

They add the new facilities will replace buildings at the end of their useful lifespan, and will be designed to the LEED Silver standard to reduce environmental impacts.

The request for proposals for construction of the new detachments will be issued mid-2017.

Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Marie-France Lalonde says “modernizing local police detachments supports the OPP’s delivery of policing services, and will enhance community safety in areas across the province. We all benefit from efficient, effective, and modern policing services.”

The province adds this new phase is being delivered using Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Financing and Procurement model, “an innovative way of financing and procuring large, complex public infrastructure projects, with a track record of being 96 per cent on budget and 73 per cent on time or within one month of the scheduled substantial completion date.”

As part of Phase One, Ontario replaced 18 detachments, regional headquarters and forensic identification services with 17 new facilities in 16 communities.
