A 2017 “Junior A” National Champion is taking over the reins on the Timmins Rock bench.

Corey Beer will take on the role, according to a press release from the team.

Beer spent the last five years as an Assistant Coach with the Cobourg Cougars from the Ontario Junior Hockey League. He was promoted to Co-Head Coach part way through the 2016-17 OJHL season and help to lead the Cougars to an RBC Cup “Junior A” National Championship earlier this month.

“We are very happy with our decision on hiring Corey as our head coach” says Team President Ted Gooch.

“Corey comes with a great record with the Cougars, including a regular season penalty kill percentage of 89.3% last season which was ranked #1 in the OJHL.”

With Beer’s help, Cobourg accumulated four straight winning seasons and a combined record of 136-58-3-18 in five years.  In that time, more than 10 players have advanced to the NCAA Division 1 ranks, as well as major junior.

There is a bit of a local connection too.  Beer had on his bench this season two Iroquois Falls natives and former Abitibi Eskimos in Brendan Locke and Brennan Roy.

He also coached Devin Shore in his time in Whitby.  Shore went 61st overall to the Dallas Stars in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and is coming off his first full season with the big club.

Gooch says Beer will begin working with General Manager Kevin Peever and assistant coaches James Daschuk and Marc Bisson immediately to assist in player recruitment.
