Don’t hold your breath if you’re waiting to hear if Timmins broke even for the Stars and Thunder Festival.

Mayor Steve Black says they’re still a couple weeks away from finalizing the numbers, noting the Director of Finance is currently crunching the numbers.

“(Finance is) getting all the receivables from all the vendors, all the bills from people that we need to pay still,” he said, noting the city has to process their own payroll as well and attribute any overtime worked.

A report last month stated the worst-case scenario would be we’re $1 million dollars short and the average resident would pay up to $45 on their tax bill to cover it off.

Black says with the uptake in ticket sales and higher than forecasted beverage sales among other things, he’s comfortable in saying we’re “far below” the aforementioned scenario.

Whether we broke even, Black isn’t sure as of yet.

Looking at the festival itself, Black says the vast majority of comments he got were positive. That being from residents, out-of-town guests and even the artists themselves.

So is there a chance this comes back in 2018?

“That’s a discussion council will have to have,” Black answered, “I know a lot of them attended the festival and they heard the feedback from the residents, the out-of-town guests.”

Black notes there is a Timmins Chamber of Commerce survey out right now to get feedback from local business owners and gather a sense on the festival’s economic impact.

Black also passed along a message of thanks, which you can hear in the audio clip below.
