Thursday at 10:00am, faculty at colleges across Ontario will partake in a strike mandate vote, citing a “broken” college system.

In a release sent by OPSEU Local 653 President Lad Shaba, they say faculty want a better system and believe a strong strike vote gives them the power to do it.

They say some of the issues at stake include not having a voice in any academic decisions and having 81 per cent of teaching at Ontario colleges being done by contracted part-time workers.

Shaba adds management is asking for workload concessions, such as the removal of workload limits and evaluation factors “that will adversely impact our working conditions and our students’ learning environment.”

They believe if management has their way, the 81 per cent could turn into 95-100 per cent in four years.

Shaba also notes all management positions are full-time, and their numbers have increased significantly over the last few years.
