Expect more police on the roadway this long weekend across the country.

Timmins Police Traffic Sargent Thomas Chypyha says Operation Impact will see a heightened police presence this long weekend to prevent—or at least minimize—the “Big 4” dangerous driving behaviours.

Those Big 4 include: impaired driving, improper seatbelt use, aggressive and distracted driving.

The campaign takes place annually during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This weekend is strategic in that it is a significant long weekend, with many people travelling the roadways both in the city and surrounding areas.

Chypyha adds it’ll be zero tolerance, so don’t expect just a warning if you’re caught.

“The deaths, pain, and broken hearts that result from carelessness behind the wheel can be prevented,” he says.

“In order for us, as a police service, to make our roads safer, the involvement of the public is essential. We will continue to educate the public and conduct enforcement to encourage safe driving practices.”

Last year in Timmins, there was one motor vehicle collision fatality, and 117 personal injury collisions. There were 13 impaired driving related collisions.
