**TIMMINS MULTICULTURAL CENTRE NEWS RELEASE**

Join us for the 5th annual Evening of Applause to celebrate our community’s outstanding human rights and diversity leaders at TH&VS on March 25, 2019 from 6pm to 8:30pm.

TIMMINS, ON: The Evening of Applause celebrates Students Who Make a Difference recipients and City of Timmins Human Rights Wall of Fame inductees. The evening includes entertainment from local schools, as well as special performances from cultural groups, and is free for everyone in our community to attend.

The event is held in conjunction with the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination for Racial Discrimination (IDERD), which takes place each year on March 21 around the world. This will be the fifth year the Evening of Applause will be celebrated in Timmins. The initiative aims to recognize community members who have demonstrated leadership in human rights or anti-discrimination activities locally, regionally, nationally or internationally.

This year, the Timmins Together committee has named Julie Béchard, founding Executive Director of le Centre Passerelle pour femmes du nord de l’Ontario, for her dedication to advocating for women’s rights in our community, especially for francophone women. The committee has also named Nicole Gillard and Mel Chartier, founders of Project Love, for their dedication in providing meals to community members facing hardships. Photos of inducted members of the Human Rights Wall of Fame are displayed at the main entrance to the Timmins Public Library/ CHMA Building, which has been generously sponsored by the City of Timmins.

The Evening of Applause is sponsored by Goldcorp and organized by the Timmins Together Committee representing the Université de Hearst, Collège Boréal, District School Board Ontario North East, Conseil scolaire public du Nord-Est de l’Ontario, Northeastern Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire catholique de district des Grandes Rivières, Northern College, Timmins Local Immigration Partnership, Timmins & District Multicultural Centre, Algoma University, Cochrane District Social Planning Council, and the City of Timmins.
