An interesting experiment took place Friday, January 22nd 2021, with indie rock musicians The Flaming Lips. The world’s first ever social distanced live BUBBLE concert.

100 people were able to come to this special live concert, the first in months, at The Criterion in The Flaming Lips’ hometown of Oklahoma City. ALL attendees were encased in plastic ‘Space Bubbles’, including the band itself, to protect every single person enjoying the show from risking exposure to Covid19. Looks like it was pretty fun in the bubbles too.

Would you go to a concert in a bubble? It could be the quickest way for us to see a live show any time soon, and body surfing looks like it turns into bubble surfing? Cool. Here’s hoping this is a sign that live music at music venues has started it’s revival.

I suppose Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne said he played around with the idea of a bubble concert on the first day of lockdown, saying, “I made a little cartoon. I drew myself. It was The Flaming Lips in 2019, and I’m the only one in a space bubble, and I’m on stage, then I drew The Flaming Lips in 2020. I’m in a space bubble, but so is everyone else. Of course, I would think of that, because isn’t this absurd?” Well you could say so far this social distanced concert experiment was a success.
