In a recent interview, Dave Grohl mentioned that not only does he still get together to jam with fellow surviving Nirvana members Kirst Novoselic and fellow Foo Fighter Pat Smear, but they also work on new material. He went into more specific detail, saying “we don’t like run through a big old Nirvana set list but we do like to fool around and sometimes as we’re fooling around, songs happen. And you know if we’re in a studio, we’ll record them. So we’ve recorded some stuff that’s really cool.”

Don’t get too excited just yet, because it doesn’t sound like the rest of us will get to hear what they’ve been cooking up. Grohl continued to say “it’s more just like friends, jamming around, it doesn’t really seem like any sort of like big official reunion.”

Even if there aren’t any immediate plans to release any of these recordings, we can still sit tightly and hope that they’ll find their way out into the world as part of a box set or archival release one day. Until then, we can remember the time Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear teamed up with Paul McCartney for a track on the Sound City soundtrack. That might be the closest we’ll get to a recording of the partial Nirvana reunion for some time.
