Bruce Springsteen’s triumphant return to the stage in Phoenix marked a significant moment in his storied career, as he reunited with the E Street Band to kick off their world tour after a prolonged hiatus. This break, caused by the singer’s battle with peptic ulcer disease, forced the iconic rock performer to confront the possibility that his days of live performances might be over.

In an interview with Jim Rotolo on E Street Radio, Springsteen candidly shared the challenges he faced during his health ordeal. The 74-year-old musician revealed that the effects of the gastro disease not only disrupted his physical well-being but also threatened his ability to sing. “Once I started singing, you know, you can rehearse singing, but your voice isn’t the same in rehearsal. You don’t have that edge of adrenaline that really pushes it into a better place,” he explained.

Springsteen elaborated on the severity of his condition, highlighting the excruciating pain he experienced when attempting to sing due to the discomfort in his diaphragm. For months, he grappled with uncertainty about his future as a performer, unsure if he would ever regain his ability to deliver his trademark high-energy performances.

During this challenging period, Springsteen expressed gratitude for the support of his medical team, who provided reassurance and guidance as he navigated his recovery journey. Their expertise and care ultimately enabled him to return to the stage, allowing him to resume doing what he loves most.

At the Phoenix concert, Springsteen delighted fans with a spirited performance, delivering 29 songs with his characteristic fervour. Remarkably, he refrained from mentioning his medical struggles until the very end of the set, when he humorously acknowledged the ordeal with characteristic candour.

As the tour presses on, with upcoming performances scheduled in San Diego and beyond, Springsteen’s triumphant return serves as a testament to his resilience and enduring passion for music. Despite facing significant obstacles, he has emerged stronger than ever, ready to continue captivating audiences around the world with his electrifying performances.
